I grew up in a small village outside of Brighton, I was surrounded by the natural, organic shapes of the fields, forests and rivers. Now, living in the built up environment of London, my environment is very different.  I miss the soft edges and curves of my environment where I grew up. This project aims to expose a juxtaposition between organic shapes within nature and our obsession with straight lines and right angles. Through film narration, I explore rights angles as a form of standardisation. Going through the process of identifying, planning and escaping, I explore the incompatibility of shape between the organic and industrial.

Video outcome with narration describing the juxtaposition created by the cube.

Other forms of experimentation were explored with the concept of standardization.

The project started with video narration of my concious becoming paranoid about the abundance of right angles.

This video uses Vital’s synthesis software to shift between a harsh square wave and a natural sine wave, reflecting the cube’s position. When out of place, the uneasy square wave is heard; when aligned, it transitions smoothly to a sine wave. This audio-visual interplay lets you both see and feel the cube’s impact on its environment.
